Background

I was one of the two designers for Epic’s Tapestry team, which builds tools that help manage health insurance operations within Epic. As the lead UX designer in Tapestry Medical Management and Membership, I was responsible for creating softwares that...

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION

UXDs are always working to bring together people from various departments, actively involved in cross-functional collaboration. There are two types of collaborations: Cross-Role Collaboration and Cross-App Collaboration.

Cross-Role Collaboration

I worked with people from various different roles frequently on all projects, bringing together the perspectives of multiple stakeholders.

Cross-App Collaboration

The UXD team sets up many incubators that bring together UXDs from different apps across the company to discuss crossovers in our projects.

MY RESPONSIBILITIES

As the lead UXD on the health plan team, I have to frequently join upper management for decision making. Here is my involvement in a project cycle:

*This is just a very simplified version of the project cycle. In reality, we would most likely go back to any of these stages repeatedly. (But that would make this flowchart look like a wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff).

How We do Research

As a B2B platform with a very specific group of users (healthcare workers), Epic’s research is unlike any I’ve done before. Rather than mass-audience user tests and interviews, I got immersed in a variety of new research methods.

SCOPE

I was actively involved in designing Future Vision project, which by Epic terms means making design decisions by looking at least 5 years into the future
